My first memorable meal after arriving on Okinawa in 1990 was at a small cornerside restaurant just down from Gate 2 Kadena in Okinawa City. The small restaurant only had 5 or 6 tatami tables and a few smaller tables with chairs. The menu was basic, prices were very cheap, you could see the chef in the back of the restaurant taking orders from the waitress. As I looked over the menu, pictures of sushi, sashimi, and soups, popped off the pages. The menu was in Japanese so pictures were the way I would order. I chose Tonkatsu along with a salad, and a miso soup with clams. The price was 600 yen which at that time was slightly more than 4 dollars. It still is one of the best things I have ever eaten.
The last time I ate there was in February 2016. The price is still 600 yen, but due to the devaluation of the US dollar, that equivocates to about 5 dollars and change. Still a great deal, still the same waitress, same cook, same menu, same great food. Every time I go back to Okinawa I revisit this tiny restaurant. Teishoku Marunaka is a must stop for a delicious lunch or dinner.
